One of the most critical tools for shooting handheld footage is having focus peaking in your monitor or viewfinder.
This function creates colored lines around objects that are in focus, and those lines move and adjust in real time as you change focus.
You can usually change the color, intensity, and responsiveness of these lines.
Based on the principle that the sharpest points of the image will also have the highest contrast, modern focus peaking is extremely accurate.
Most cameras have this function built-in, but if yours doesn’t, you can mount a 3rd party monitor on your camera that has focus peaking, such as those from SmallHD.
Especially at wide apertures, it’s hard to confirm critical focus in a tiny monitor or viewfinder.
But the introduction of focus peaking has helped filmmakers to be more confident that their shots remain crystal clear.
